Radiohead, MGMT, Tom Waits and Sufjan Stevens can boast a shared musical genre—hip-hop. At least, they can now that Philadelphia sample kings Chiddy Bang have broken onto the scene. The duo of rapper Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege and producer Xaphoon Jones (aka Noah Beresin) met at Drexel University in 2009, and when they released the tune “Opposite of Adults,” featuring a hefty sampling from MGMT’s “Kids,” it led to 80,000 downloads of their mixtape Swelly Express in just a month.
Chiddy Bang are taking hip-hop in new directions, as Jones explained in an interview with U.K. publication Clash Music: “I could make a million soul-sampling records every day, but that’s not what Chiddy Bang are about. We’re about the science of a hit, the science of pop.” With airplay on Radio 1, love from MTV and admiration from big players like Major Lazer and ?uestlove, it’s a safe bet that these classmates will continue to earn high marks.
