RESISTANT NOISE!

A New Album by Chicago Composer Janice Misurell-Mitchell

From music critic Neil Tesser, about Resistant Noise: “This album presents a movable (and moving) feast, traversing a half-century of work by Chicago composer, flutist, vocal artist, educator, and activist Janice Misurell-Mitchell. Her compositions reflect an unusually catholic approach to the sounds and even sights around her, from within and without the classical music sphere; these she refracts through an open-minded but highly focused, now sober, now whimsical musical intellect. Onstage, playing flute and giving voice to poetry, she reveals a delightful disinhibition. Offstage, she has played a key role in formation and growth two new music initiatives — the contemporary chamber ensemble CUBE and the women’s collective 6Degrees Composers. JM-M cuts a formidable figure on the Chicago scene.

Her music sits at the crossroads — the five corners, actually — of 20th-century classical composition, expressionistic poetry, and the jazz avant-garde, emblematized by Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). In fact, although her music and that of the AACM proceed from divergent starting points, they occasionally meet somewhere in between.

The scale and scope of her composition, Resistant Noise make it the centerpiece of this collection, and an obvious choice for the album title. But it resonates beyond that, in JM-M’s relentless desire to push back against conformity by making noise — however joyful or discordant, calming or electrifying, provocative or comforting, that the occasion might call for.”
