About
***Countertechnique®*** provides tools for body and mind to deal with the demanding dance practice of the 21st century. It is a movement system to help the dancer think about the dancing body, focusing on the process of incorporating information into action. Within a clear structure of exercises the Countertechnique® class thoroughly prepares the body for rehearsal and performance, enabling dancers to move bigger, more fluidly and more spatially, while becoming stronger and more flexible. Dancers are encouraged to be pro-active in discovering connections and solutions, to be less concerned with judging themselves and to work in a healthy way with regard to body and mind. Countertechnique® makes daily training a valuable investment in the dancer's own development, as well as interesting personal research. Countertechnique® was created and developed by Dutch choreographer, dancer and teacher Anouk van Dijk, former artistic director of Australian dance company Chunky Move. ***Sophie Minouche Allen*** performs, choreographs, teaches, and collaborates throughout Chicago and beyond. She received her BFA in Dance and BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) from the University of Michigan in 2019, and became a certified Countertechnique® Teacher in 2023 under the tutelage of Anouk van Dijk. Sophie is on faculty at The Grainger Academy of The Joffrey Ballet, teaches open classes throughout the city, and is honored to teach with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago for company classes and their summer programming. Additionally, Sophie has had the pleasure of guest teaching with FACT/SF, Western Michigan University, The University of Chicago, DanceWorks Chicago, Chicago Movement Collective, Denison University, DISCO RIOT, and many others. Sophie nurtures a nonjudgmental, uplifting class environment in support and pursuit of the joyfulness of learning and dancing together. To her, teaching and practicing Countertechnique® is both a thrill and a welcomed invitation to meet the challenges and pleasures of each moment with ease and courage.
